Abstract
Mass control of Ascaris lunnbricoides infection in ROK Army as a part of Health Control Program is based on the principle of mass chemotherapy with piperazine citrate conducted twice annually. To evaluate currently used program on the Ascarzs infection status, authors conducted stool examinations on 3 field army units before and after the mass chemotherapy on Dec. 1971.
The results wcrc ¡Ë lysed and two hypotheses on dynamics of Ascaris infection in Army after some postulations were presented as follows:
1) The positive rate of A. Zumbricoides infection by stool examination was 37.2%. In group of recruits; it was 56.2% and the proportion of unfertilized ova passers was 33.2%. In enlisted man(EM) group, infection rate was 27.6% and the proportion was 54.2 % of positive cases.
2) The drug used in this mass chemotherapy was piperazine citrate tablets and dosage was 70mg/kg body weight two times each in 1 week interval. The egg negative conversion rate of this regimen was 80.4%. After treatment, the infection rate in recruits group was dropped to 10.1% and in EM group, to 6.2% respectively.
3) On the bases of postulations described in -Fig.2, the input amount of infected recruits to the existing units per 6 months was calculated as 40.9%.
4) The first hypothesis, "If the Ascaris infection rate of a unit is fluctuate from 5% exactly after mass control to 25% just before next control 6 months later, the determining factors involved in fluctuation are, a) discharge of EM from the service with Iower infection rate; -0.8%, b) input of trained recruits with higher infection rate to existing units; +6. 8%, c) Reinfection or new infection during 6 months; + 14.0%." is based on the postulations illustrated in Fig. 3.
5) The rationale of the second hypothesis, "If all the recruits are treated during their training periods, the infection rate in existing units will drop from 5 e?25% to 4-¢¥20%." was illustrated in Fig. 4.
6) The characteristics of army in epidemiological point of view in Ascaris infection were discussed¢¥ in aspects of strengh turn-over and closed society.
